Project Overview
Romero Britto’s signature style is characterized by vivid hues, bold lines, and an infectious sense of happiness. His dynamic approach blends elements of pop art, cubism, and street art, making him the perfect inspiration for a Valentine’s Day craft that will spark creativity and joy.
Materials Needed
- Papier multi-technique
- Sharpies or markers
- White wax crayon
- Watercolour paint set & paintbrush
- Glitter glue, stickers, self-adhesive gemstones
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1
Show students images of Britto’s work for inspiration or ask them to search online using their tablet or computer by typing Romero Britto original paintings in the search bar.
Step 2
Using a black sharpie or black marker, let them draw a large heart on their paper. Use the template provided if necessary.

Step 3
Ask them to draw lines to create sections within their heart and around it.

Step 4
With a white wax crayon, they will trace over their black lines. The wax of the crayon will create a barrier between the watercolour paint they will apply later so the different colours they choose will not mix.

Step 5
Using their paintbrush, ask them to paint their paper with clean water. They should apply lots of water.

Step 6
They can now paint their sections using different colours. They should rinse and wipe their paintbrush well between colours.

Step 7
Once their paper is completely dry, they will use a black sharpie or black marker to draw large polka-dots, diagonal lines or other patterns on and around their heart.

Step 8
Using colourful markers, they will draw more shapes and playful patterns as Romero Britto does such as:
- Dots
- Circles
- Straight lines
- Zigzag patterns
- Small flowers

Step 9
They can use stickers and self-adhesive gemstones to decorate their heart.
Step 10
They can apply strips of gemstones over their black sharpie lines or decorate them with glitter glue.

This project not only creates a beautiful piece of art but also introduces your students to the joyful world of Romero Britto’s creative expression. By focusing on color, pattern, and positivity, kids will learn that art is about celebrating life and spreading happiness.
