FAQ

Many different terms are used today when referring to individuals with disabilities. We know that the preference for using ‘special needs’, or ‘disability’, varies among individuals and communities.

We at Little Box of Magic have chosen to use the term special needs when referring to individuals with diverse abilities.

This term commonly used in the field of education, refers to students who require accommodations due to intellectual, physical or developmental disabilities.

We understand that this term is sometimes criticized for being overly broad or stigmatizing; this however is not our intention.

At Little Box of Magic, we strive to provide art activities that support and help students with disabilities achieve their full potential.

A child or student that requires extra help in doing tasks that average children can do on their own because of a physical, intellectual or developmental impairment or disability.

Impairment: an impairment can be caused by an injury or a disease, or by being born a certain way.

Disability: a disability is the result of having an impairment (physical or intellectual) that makes it more difficult for an individual to live a regular life within their community.

Developmental delays, problems with thinking and learning, difficulties coordinating movements, blindness, Down syndrome, autistic spectrum disorders.

Neurodivergence is the idea that some brains work differently than the brain of the average person. An example would be being diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

Life skills are the things we do every day to take care of ourselves in order to live an independent healthy life.

Examples of life skills would be washing our hands when they are dirty without anyone telling us to do so, making choices and taking decisions, behaving in a safe manner, cleaning or putting things away where they belong after we use them, the list is endless!

The ability to plan, organize, follow steps and manage time are examples of executive functioning skills.
