This art activity was created with special needs students in mind. It may take several sessions to complete depending on their attention span, fine motor skills and independence level.

Conversely, any student from pre-kindergarten to grade 5 (4 to 10 years old) will enjoy creating their own masterpiece while following our step-by-step instructions or by using the materials as they please.

Teaching Objectives

• Students will explore inspiration pieces to create a beautiful Christmas beach scene holiday greeting card using watercolour and tempera paint techniques.
• Students will vary the intensity of watercolours by adding water to dilute them and lighten or darken tempera paint colours to soften or deepen them.
• Students will learn to apply paint using different types of brush strokes.

This project comes with an extended learning opportunity to learn about the American cartoonist Charles M. Schulz.

Basic materials such as pencils, coloring pencils, markers, scissors, liquid glue, and glue sticks must be provided by students. The materials provided are for the main art project only.
