Sep-by-Step Instructions
Step 1
Show students images of spooky Halloween landscapes for inspiration or ask them to search online using their tablet or computer by typing spooky Halloween landscape in the search bar.
Step 2
Distribute all the materials your students will need for this part of the project and help them fasten their sheet to their desk with masking or artist tape. When tape is used all around the edges, it creates a nice well-defined border once removed.
Ask your students to dip their wet paintbrush in the yellow and orange hard tempera cakes and paint a giant moon in the night sky.
Step 3
They will continue painting their night sky using the purple and indigo tempera cakes by first dipping their paintbrush in water and covering their whole sheet with paint.
Note that the paint colours are only suggestions. Allow your students to add their personal touch by deciding which colours to use.
Step 4
While their sky dries, your students will draw a haunted house on mixed media paper. If this is too difficult, provide a template for them and ask your students to flip their paper over and paint the backside in black.
Once dry they will turn it again, they will flip it back and use their scissors to cut it out.
Step 5
While their haunted house is drying, they can paint their trees. It’s ok if their sky is not fully dry. Ask them to dip their paintbrush in black liquid tempera paint and to start by painting their tree trunk, followed by curly branches that reach high into the sky, as they practiced in the exercise.
They can paint as many trees as they would like.
Step 6
As their trees dry, help them organize their workspace for the next part of the project where they will need, self-adhesive glitter paper, scissors, glue, markers and oil pastels.
It is now time for your students to cut out their haunted house.
Some may struggle with this step. Help them as you see fit.
Step 7
Ask your students to cut the self-adhesive glitter paper into squares, rectangles and circles. They can first trace their shapes on the back if that is easier for them.
They can peel and stick their shapes on their haunted house creating windows and doors.
Step 8
Once decorated, ask them to glue their haunted house on their painting using a glue stick.
They can add interesting details on their landscape such as bats, spiders, ghosts and ghouls using markers or oil pastels.
Writing Component
To enhance the project, incorporate a writing exercise:
After completing their artwork, have students write a short paragraph describing their haunted house. They can include details about what makes it spooky and any imaginative stories about its inhabitants.
Displaying the Art
Once finished, mount each piece of artwork on black construction paper for an eye-catching display. This not only showcases the kids’ creativity but also creates a festive atmosphere for Halloween.
This haunted house art project is not only fun but also educational, fostering creativity and narrative skills in children. It’s perfect for classrooms or home activities during the Halloween season.
Encourage kids to share their creations with friends and family to spread the Halloween cheer!
Happy crafting!
